Meet Brenda Cowan RN, BSN

Faith Community Nurse

A native Virginian, Brenda Cowan, a graduate of the University of Virginia (BSN ’77) has enjoyed an extensive and diverse nursing career.  Inpatient experiences ranging from surgical, maternal/child, operating room, infection control and patient education to outpatient physician’s office nursing and patient education.  Direct patient care and patient education are her passions. From developing a holiday cookbook and demo for patients with diabetes, to her certification as a Population Care Coordinator, Cowan has been at the frontline of today’s medicine.

Integrating her deep faith and mission, Cowan completed her Health Ministry and Parish Nurse Certification in 2004 and established the Health Ministry at Central Presbyterian Church PC/USA in Anderson, SC.  She continued in her role there until 2015.

Since her move to Huntsville, AL, she has revitalized the Health Ministry of Faith Presbyterian Church PC/USA. As our congregation ages, more conversations are especially needed regarding health, wellness, and good health promotion.   A medical mission trip to Léogâne, Haiti was quite a humbling and rewarding experience for her. She is also on the ground floor of establishing a network of FCNs of Northern Alabama as a resource sharing group. She is currently a Board of Director member of Faith Community Nurses International and Membership Committee Chairman.

In her free time, she is a part-time CPR instructor at Huntsville Hospital. She enjoys traveling with her husband, crafting, landscaping and her wet pets.
